Students can choose from the diverse courses available for academic, professional and vocational studies at universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, secondary schools and private training establishments. Apart from these there are also a number of English language institutes and private English language schools. In New Zealand education between the ages of 6-16 years is compulsory. The New Zealand government provides for free education in state schools for the residents. Pre-Primary school begins at the age of 3 or 4 years. Primary schooling begins around the age of 6 or 7 years depending on the performance of the student. Secondary education starts around the age of 13 years.
