About College IIT Delhi is situated at Hauz Khas in South Delhi, which is a landmark place in the colourful and chequered history of Delhi. Bounded by the Sri Aurobindo Marg on the east, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Complex on the west, the National Council of Educational Research and Training on the south, and the New Ring Road on the north, the Institute campus is flanked by Qutub Minar and the Hauz Khas monuments. Well connected to the major city centres by open and wide roads, the Institute campus is about 19 Km. away from the Delhi Main Railway Station, 14 Km. from the New Delhi Railway Station, 21 Km. from the Inter-State Bus Terminal and 10 Km. from Delhi Airport.
History The institute was established as College of Engineering & Technology, Delhi on August 21, 1961. Its foundation stone was laid by HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and was inaugurated by Prof. Humayun Kabir, then Union Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs.

After less than two years of existence, Parliament of India amended Institutes of Technology Act, and upgraded the institute as Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. The IIT Delhi main building was formally opened by Dr. Zakir Hussain, the then President of India, on March 2, 1968.

IIT Delhi, like all other Indian Institutes of Technology, is best known for its undergraduate program that include the Bachelor of Technology program , the Dual Degree Bachelor-cum-Master of Technology program and an Integrated Master of Technology Program. It also offers postgraduate level programs like Master of Technology, Master of Science, Master of Science (Research), Master of Business Administration, Master of Design (Industrial Design). Finally it also offers a Ph.D. program. The admission criteria for all these programs is different at the entry level. Throughout its history IIT Delhi has produced outstanding engineers and scientists through these programs

Addmission Exams for Addmission
  1. JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) - For admissions to Under Graduate Programmes (BTech), MSc Integrated Courses, MTech Integrated Courses and Dual Degree MTech programmes.

  2. GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) - For admissions to Postgraduate Programmes in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science and Pharmacy.

  3. JMET (Joint Management Entrance Test) - For admissions to PG Degree Programme in Management (MBA).

  4. JAM (Joint Admission Test) - For admissions to MSc and other post BSc Programmes.

  5. CEED (Common Entrance Examination for Design) - For admissions to Master of Design (MDes) Programmes.

Departments IIT Delhi has 13 departments. A department usually focuses on a single engineering or science discipline. Each department has its own administration structure with the Head of the Department (HoD) at the top of it. The HoD heads the department for a period of two years after which a new head is appointed. Each department offers a program (at the undergraduate or post-graduate level), some departments such as Mechanical Engineering Department, offer two or more undergraduate level programs and some departments collaborate with each other to offer a joint program. An example of the latter is the M.Tech in Optical Communications program which is offered by the Department of Physics and Department of Electrical Engineering.
